A person who flees the scene of an Oklahoma car accident can face strict penalties. Even if there are no injuries involved, a hit and run driver can still face a misdemeanor charge. If there are injuries involved, a person can face a felony charge as well as a $1,000 fine and up to two years in prison. The hit and run driver will also have their license revoked.
When the accident results in fatality, it is also considered a felony and there will also be license revocation. Additional penalties include 10 years in prison and a fine of $10,000.
How Can I Recover Compensation?
If the hit and run driver cannot be located, there are still ways you can recover compensation for your injuries and other damages. Your auto insurance may be able to help, although having minimum coverage will not pay for anything hit and run related.
However, other coverage can pay for some of the damages. For example, if you have medical payments coverage, it will cover medical bills as a result of your injuries. If you have full coverage, you likely have collision insurance, which will pay for damage to your vehicle. Uninsured motorist insurance can be especially helpful. While not required, this optional coverage can pay for damages not covered by your other forms of insurance, such as lost wages, pain and suffering, and funeral expenses.
